November 2000 News

Honor to whom honor is due
More than two hundred fifty of the 300 some hours spent working on the opportunity quilt were provided by five people (not counting the chairman Holly Rozanski who put in many hours). Holly made them each a thank you gift, and presented it at the meeting Monday. They are Kay Kenner, Freida Lorenz, Mary Belle Dohogne, Phyllis Herbst, and Mary Lou McNair. Thank you Holly, too, for all your time and leadership.

30's reproduction fabrics needed
The new opportunity quilt will be made with 30s reproduction fabrics. If you have a fat eighth or an 8 inch by 10 inch piece, please bring it to guild

Time to renew your membership
Sign up early, and make sure your name gets in the yearbook. Send in the whole back page of your newsletter, or download a form. Sign up for a committee. You'll have fun, and the guild needs you. Jane's advice is that "You'll be good at whatever you enjoy".

Ricky Tims workshop: Quilting Caveman Style
July 8, 2000, from 10 am to 4 pm. Cost $30.
Sign up as soon as possible. See Mary K. Not in our guild? You can come anyway. We'll be ordering lunch for those interested from Heavenly Ham. Order and make your choices with Mary K.
    Supply list:
  • Sewing machine, cord, appropriate accessories.
  • Steam iron and board for every four people, extension cords.
  • Fabric: an assortment of 100% cotton fabrics in a variety of colors. Bright colors combined with deep and dark colors work well. Cuts of 1/4 to 1/2 yeard will be sufficient. Fat quarters are OK, but not recommended. Include a minimum of 10 fabrics -- lights, mediums, and darks. (A stash of 20 to 30 will of course provide you more color choices.)
  • Fabric scissors, paper, pencil, fabric marker, neutral thread, pins, masking tape, and a small bag for trimmings.
  • Matt and rotary cutter.
  • Camera -- to record your work and the work of others.
  • And most important -- "Leave your quilting inhibitions at home. We're gonna break some rules".

Saturday Sampler Series:
Doors open at the Sewing Basket at 8:45, lock at 9 am. Watch brief demo of technique/tool used to create that month's quilt block. Get started for $10. You have two options for fabric palette. Each month, if you finish your block and come to that month's Saturday demo, you get the fabric for the next block FREE. You could make all the blocks for a quilt for $10!

The Semo quilt got an Honorable Mention at the Paducah AQS show!!! Congratulations to all who were a part of it.
Vietnam wall replica help needed
Volunteers needed to help with the Wall that Heals, the Vietnam memorial wall replica that is coming to Cape Easter weekend (Thursday through Monday). Call (573)335-1631.

SEMO quilt heads to Paducah
The SEMO quilt, designed and made by members of our guild, has been accepted as an entry at the Paducah Quilt Show!!! See a picture of the quilt.
Santa goes along
Lynn Taylor is also sending a quilt to Paducah. It's her miniature quilt with the Santas and presents.
Library news
Hidden in Plain View was donated to the library in memory of Bud Cord, Betty's husband who recently passed away.
Many of you have library books that are past due. They are supposed to be checked out, and then returned at the next meeting
Quilts need for Mini Quilt Auction
Make your mini quilt for the auction to benefit Breast Cancer victims that we hold at the quilt show. Last time we raised $1000!!!
Make those nine patches!!!
We have 200 packets back, but need the other 200. They especially would like to see some bright colors used.

Beverly Scherer wins
Beverly won first place Viewer's Choice at the Shawnee Quilter's Show at University Mall, Dec. 9-12. Her quilt is a queen size sampler featuring a picture of her parents on their wedding day.

Crayola Challenge will be featured starting Jan 7. There will be an open house/reception at 5 pm. Come show your support of our guild. See a picture from the show

Community Project report
On Oct 5, baby blankets were given to Lutheran Family Service. On Dec 6 fleece blankets went to the Winnebago Indian reservation and to the Safe House (3 bed size quilts, 6 glannel covers, 2 fleece throws and 3 baby quilts)

Opportunity quilt winner chosen
See a picture of the happy winner of this year's opportunity quilt. Don't figure that we have two quilts we're working on -- ONE to make nine patch blocks for and ANOTHER to go to the Sewing Basket and quilt on. ( Picture no longer available)

Congratulations to Judy Robinson!
Judy was selected by the Missouri State Quilters Guild to be a featured Missouri Quilt Artist next May at a show in St. Louis. The show will be May 10 to June 4, 2000 at the Old Courthouse near the Arch and is FREE! Interested in a bus trip? Let Cheryl Reinagel know.
